Personal Health Environment (PGO)

A Personal Health Environment, known in Dutch as a Persoonlijke Gezondheidsomgeving or PGO, is an app or website where you can securely collect copies of your medical records. You choose which PGO you use.

Personal Health Environment (PGO)

A PGO allows you to bring together information from different healthcare providers, such as your GP, hospital or therapist. You can also add information you record yourself, such as your blood pressure, weight, diet or physical activity.

What is the difference between a PGO and a patient portal?

A PGO is not the same as a patient portal.

Personal Health Environment

You choose your own PGO. It allows you to:

  • collect medical information from different healthcare providers;
  • review test results, medical advice and letters;
  • add health information you have recorded yourself;
  • keep your health information together in one place.

A PGO allows you to retrieve copies of your medical records. The original information remains in the medical record held by the relevant healthcare provider.

Patient portal

A patient portal is an app or website belonging to one specific healthcare organisation, such as a GP practice or hospital. The healthcare organisation decides which portal it uses.

In a patient portal, you can only view the information held about you by that particular healthcare organisation. Depending on the portal, you may also be able to:

  • make an appointment;
  • request repeat medication;
  • submit an online question;
  • view test results and parts of your medical record.

If you receive care from several healthcare organisations, you may have to use several different patient portals.

Read more about our practice’s patient portal on the MijnGezondheid.net page.

Choose a PGO that suits you

Several different PGOs are available. The basic functions for retrieving medical information are free. Providers may charge for certain additional features.

Which PGO suits you best depends on your personal preferences. When choosing one, consider the functions it provides and check whether it has the MedMij label. This label indicates that the PGO complies with the standards for the secure exchange of medical information.

Visit PGO.nl for general information, frequently asked questions and guidance on choosing and using a PGO.

How do you retrieve your medical information?

In your PGO, search for the healthcare provider from whom you want to retrieve information. The PGO will then establish a secure connection with that provider.

You log in using the DigiD app to confirm your identity. A copy of the available medical information is then added to your PGO.

Not every healthcare provider can currently make all medical information available through a PGO. The information you can retrieve may therefore vary between providers.

Do you need assistance?

Problems with your PGO

If you receive an error message or are unable to retrieve your medical information, contact the support service of your chosen PGO or the PGO Information Point.
