A cervical smear test is an examination in which the GP uses a small brush to collect cells and mucus from the cervix. The laboratory tests this material for abnormal cells and for human papillomavirus (HPV).

An excision is a minor surgical procedure in which the GP completely removes a skin lesion. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. The wound is usually closed with stitches afterwards.

A 24-hour blood pressure monitor automatically measures your blood pressure throughout an entire day and night. This gives the GP a more reliable picture of your blood pressure than one or several measurements taken at the practice.

A shave excision is a minor surgical procedure in which the GP removes a raised skin lesion superficially. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic using a special flexible blade, called a Dermablade, or a surgical blade.

In consultation with your GP, you may choose to have an IUD inserted; this can usually be done at the GP practice itself.

Spirometry can be performed during Asthma/COPD check-ups or at the request of the GP.

A skin biopsy is a minor procedure in which the GP removes a small piece of skin for laboratory examination. In our practice, this is usually performed using a small, hollow, circular instrument called a biopsy punch. This procedure is therefore also known as a punch biopsy.
