BENZOMOE: better sleep with less sleep medication

Sleeping tablets and sedatives can provide temporary relief from severe insomnia, anxiety or tension. With longer-term use, however, their effectiveness often decreases while side effects and dependence may remain. This can make stopping difficult.

That is why Huisartsenpraktijk Vechtrijk, Service Apotheek Weespersluis and Oefentherapie Weesp have launched the BENZOMOE project. Through this project, we support patients in using sleeping tablets and sedatives responsibly and, where possible, gradually reducing their use.

Personalised support

Have you only recently started taking sleeping tablets, or do you use them occasionally? We will discuss how to use your medication as safely as possible and how to prevent short-term use from unintentionally becoming long-term use.

Have you been taking sleeping tablets or sedatives for a longer period? Together, we will assess whether reducing or stopping your medication is possible and medically appropriate. If you decide to reduce your medication, this will be done gradually and according to a personalised tapering schedule. You are not required to stop.

In addition to support from your GP and pharmacy, we also focus on helping you sleep better without medication. Depending on your situation, support may be available from the practice mental health nurse, Oefentherapie Weesp or the free RHOGO sleep-training programme.

The aim is not simply to use less medication, but above all to sleep better, wake up feeling more refreshed and regain confidence in your natural ability to sleep.

Do not stop on your own

If you have been taking sleeping tablets or sedatives every day for a longer period, do not stop suddenly or change the dosage yourself. This can cause serious withdrawal symptoms. Always discuss reducing or stopping your medication with your GP first.
